In the Sacred Heart, children may be prepared for First Holy Communion when they are 7 years old or above and in Year Three or above.
Preparation sessions take place in the Old Hall on seven Saturday’s either in the morning or afternoon depending on which group the child belongs to. The sessions are not weekly, but are spaced out to make it possible for your child not to lose contact with other weekend activities (football, dancing and so forth).
We are currently using the book ‘Jesus Comes to Me’ by Dora Nash. This will be made available at the first parents’ meeting. Each child will attend the session lead by Fr Seán (without the parent). After each session there will be some homework, with which you may need to help your child. If you need help with this, it is always available.
There will be a short test during session 4 to check that your child is ready to make their First Confession and again a test during session 7 to ensure they are ready to make their First Holy Communion.
First Communion is usually celebrated in groups in May or early June at the Sacred Heart Church. When all of the First Holy Communions have been made, we will have a celebration Mass with the community. All of the children will then be presented with their certificates, and we will have a celebratory breakfast in the Centenary Hall afterwards.
